The 2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar is drawing heavy criticism, and has been associated with everything from bribery to corruption to slavery and hostile working conditions for the builders. It is estimated that 900 workers have died already!
What’s happening to the workers?
Migrant workers’ passports are being confiscated upon entry in to the country, and their pay is being held up indefinitely. These workers are unable to leave the country, as they need exit visas. This came into light when Nepalese workers wanted to return home post the Nepal Earthquake but were unable to do so. Add to that the intense heat in Qatar. They had to shift the event to the winters because of the heat, but yet not a thought is being spared for the labourers who continue to work in these extreme conditions without appropriate wages.
